EMT Spencer Doran Receives Shield Award

FRS Knights of Columbus award 2024

EMT Spencer Doran was selected as this year’s FRS recipient of the Knights of Columbus Shield Award, the annual honors given to first responders in Fanwood and Scotch Plains by the Father Nelligan Council based at St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. The award was presented by Rescue Squad president Karolyn Buckridee and Grand Knight Patrick Harrington.

“Spencer has been one of the most active cadets on the Fanwood Rescue Squad,” remarked Captain Brian Downing. “She obtained her EMT certification and has been extremely active riding multiple crews, as well as scrambling for calls as needed.  She participates with other committees, meetings, and the first aid council as well.  She has been a wonderful addition to FRS both operationally and with her gregarious personality, and plans to attend nursing school in the fall.”

Awards for Fanwood Police and Fire personnel went to Police Officer Carlos Gonzalez, Jr., presented by Lt. Dan Kranz, who said Officer Gonzalez demonstrated resilience and determination as a police officer while dealing with a major medical issue. He was unable to attend the ceremony

And for the Fanwood Fire Department, Chief John Piccola presented awards to Captain Antony Grasso, Jr., Captain Matthew Ridge (who was unable to attend), and Captain Vincent Bianco for their efforts in running the crews and day-to-day operations of the department, citing their efforts of the camaraderie, morale and training of members.
