Remembering Carlos Gonzalez

With deep sorrow, the Fanwood Police Department, along with the entire Fanwood community, law enforcement family, and the Gonzalez family, grieves the loss of Officer Carlos Gonzalez Jr. His passing leaves a deep wound that won’t heal, but his legacy and positive attitude will continue to guide and inspire us all.

Carlos Gonzalez, Jr., a decorated police officer and resident of Scotch Plains, passed away Wednesday, March 5th at JFK Medical Center in Edison after an extended battle with Lymphoma. He was 35 years old.

Carlos was born and raised in Newark and graduated from East Side High School. He attended Essex County College then went on to earn his degree in Criminal Justice from Kean University. He started his career in Law Enforcement 11 years ago with the Newark Police Department where he served for six years before joining the Fanwood Police Department in 2020.

Carlos played baseball while in high school. He was a huge NY Mets and wrestling fan. He always enjoyed spending time with loved ones, bbqing outside, and being adventurous with food.

He will be remembered for his joyful and kind personality, his love for his family, and never giving up. His daughter, Olivia, was the light of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Martin Gonzalez; his daughter, Olivia; his parents, Carlos and Sonia; his brother, Kevin and his wife Paola; and his grandmothers Julia and Luisa Gonzalez. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave, Fanwood, on Monday, March 10th, from 4 PM to 8 PM. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Columba’s RC Church, 25 Thomas St., Newark on Tuesday, March 11th, at 10:30 AM. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS).
